Diagnostics Ealing London

A warning light on your dashboard can be worrying, but finding the cause quickly and accurately is what we do best. At Auto Workshop, established in 1978, we've been providing car diagnostics in Ealing from our garage on Elers Road since 1995. With dealer-level diagnostic equipment and access to manufacturer technical data, we can track down faults on all makes and models, and we have specialist knowledge of Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda.

How Your Car's Electronics Communicate

Modern cars are packed with electronics. Dozens of sensors monitor everything from engine temperature and wheel speed to tyre pressures, emissions and battery health. Each sensor reports to an electronic control unit, often called a module, which looks after a particular system such as the engine, brakes (ABS), airbags or gearbox.

These modules talk to each other over a network called the CAN bus (Controller Area Network). It allows information to be shared instantly across the car, so your ABS, engine and dashboard all work together. When a module detects a reading that's outside its normal range, it stores a fault code and, in many cases, switches on a warning light.

How Car Diagnostics Works

Finding a fault is usually a step-by-step process, typically starting with a Diagnostic check, but also involving other steps, depending on the fault:

Diagnostic check:

We connect our diagnostic equipment to your car's diagnostic port and read the fault codes stored across its modules. This shows us which module has picked up the problem and which system is affected.

Live data and analysis:

We look at live readings from the sensors and compare them against the manufacturer's data, to see what's really happening while the car is running.

Further testing:

Depending on what we find, we may need to carry out further checks. These can include tracing and testing wiring, checking connectors for corrosion or damage, measuring voltages and resistance, and testing individual sensors and components.

Clear explanation:

Once we've found the cause, we'll explain what's wrong in plain English and give you a clear quote before any repair work is done.

Does a Fault Code Tell You Everything?

Sadly not. A fault code tells us which module has spotted a problem and roughly where to look, but it rarely tells us the exact cause. For example, a code for a faulty sensor might really be caused by a damaged wire, a corroded connector, a vacuum leak or a different component altogether.

That's why simply reading a code and replacing a part can be costly guesswork. Our technicians use the code as a starting point, then test and trace the fault to its root cause, so you only pay for the repair you actually need.

Never Ignore a Warning Light

A warning light is there for a reason. It's your car's way of alerting you to a problem, so you can help it protect itself and prevent further damage. Some warnings are minor, but others can affect your car's safety or lead to much bigger repair bills if they're left.

Common warning lights include:

  • Engine management (check engine) light
  • ABS or brake warning light
  • Airbag (SRS) light
  • DPF (diesel particulate filter) light
  • Battery or charging warning light
  • Tyre pressure (TPMS) light

If a warning light comes on, always check your vehicle handbook or get in touch before assuming it's OK to keep driving. A quick diagnostic check will tell us what's going on and give you peace of mind.

Diagnostics for Electric and Hybrid Cars

Electric and hybrid vehicles rely even more heavily on electronics and software. Along with the usual systems, they have modules managing the high-voltage battery, electric motor, charging and battery cooling. Faults can show up as reduced range, slower charging or warning messages on the dash. With the right equipment and technical data, we can diagnose faults on electric and hybrid cars too. What is a car diagnostic check?

A car diagnostic check uses specialist equipment to read the fault codes and live data stored in your car's electronic modules. It shows which system has detected a problem and is the first step in finding the cause of a fault or warning light.

Does a fault code tell you exactly what's wrong?

No. A fault code shows which module has detected a problem and points to the affected system, but it doesn't usually identify the exact cause. Further testing, such as checking wiring, connectors and components, is often needed to find the root of the problem.

What is a CAN bus?

A CAN bus (Controller Area Network) is the network that lets your car's electronic modules communicate with each other. It allows systems such as the engine, brakes, airbags and dashboard to share information instantly.

Can I keep driving with the engine management light on?

Never assume it's OK to keep driving. A warning light is your car alerting you to a problem, so you can help prevent further damage, and some faults can affect your safety. Always check your vehicle handbook or speak to us at Auto Workshop in Ealing before driving, and have the fault checked as soon as possible.

How long does a car diagnostic check take?

An initial diagnostic check is usually fairly quick. More complex or intermittent faults can take longer, as they may need wiring tracing and further testing to find the cause.

Can you diagnose intermittent faults?

Yes. Intermittent faults that come and go can be tricky, but by combining stored fault codes, live data and careful testing, we can usually track them down.

Do you have dealer-level diagnostic equipment?

Yes. We use advanced diagnostic equipment with access to manufacturer technical data, so we can diagnose modern vehicles to the same standard as a main dealer. We're particularly experienced with Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda.
